Vermiculture is the scientific cultivation and management of earthworms for the conversion of biodegradable organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost. It is an eco-friendly and cost-effective technique that improves soil fertility, enhances crop productivity and supports sustainable waste management. Earthworms play an important role in decomposing organic matter, improving soil aeration and promoting beneficial microbial activity.
The Vermiculture course introduces learners to earthworm biology, suitable species, culture methods, vermicomposting techniques, unit establishment, maintenance, harvesting and marketing of vermicompost and related products. The course also emphasizes entrepreneurship, environmental conservation, organic farming and the practical application of vermiculture in agriculture, horticulture and rural livelihood development.
